A Roma il coach delle star di Hollywood

Sono molti i mostri sacri di Hollywood che si affidano all’opera di sapienti acting coach per affinare le proprie tecniche di recitazione. 
Se George Clooney, Julie Andrews, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helen Mirren, Kate Hudson Vanessa Hudgens, Jennifer Garner, Billy Crystal, Melissa Gilbert, Jeff Goldblum, e tanti altri si sono rivolti a Bernard Hiller è perché il suo metodo è stato consacrato come uno dei migliori al mondo consacrandolo come il “maestro di recitazione” per eccellenza. 
La sua carriera, iniziata dal teatro di Broadway, l’ha portato ad essere nello show-business da oltre 30 anni in cui ha aiutato gli studenti a diventare gli attori che sono nati per essere.
Hiller insegna oltre ai modi per lavorare come attore in film, teatro e televisione anche le tecniche per ottenere performance incredibili durante le audizioni, le capacità di analisi dei copioni, il come pianificare la propria carriera. 
Oggi Bernard  Hiller prepara anche importanti uomini d’affari e conduce le sue classi internazionali di recitazione a Londra, Parigi, Atene, Berlino e Barcellona. 
Dal 23 al 27 aprile sarà anche a Roma al Teatro Anfitrione per proporre quattro giorni di workshop e proprio per questa occasione ci ha raccontato un po’ del suo lavoro e delle sue idee non senza mostrare un entusiasmo particolare per l’Italia e la sua Capitale.

E’ stato l’artefice degli inizi delle carriere di molte star di Hollywood e nel resto del mondo. Ci può fare il nome di chi si sente particolarmente fiero?

Sono molto orgoglioso di Cameron Diaz. Ho iniziato la sua carriera con il film "The Mask" con Jim Carrey. Cameron mi dice sempre… “che cosa  avrei mai fatto senza di te”.

E’ di nuovo a Roma  per proporre il suo stage per imparare i modi per lavorare come attore nel cinema, teatro e televisione. Pensa che in Italia ci siano attori promettenti che, un giorno, potrebbero arrivare fino ad Hollywood? 

Gli italiani possono essere i migliori attori, hanno solo bisogno di una formazione più moderna e aggiornata. E il mio compito è proprio di dare loro questa preparazione. Ricordiamo che l’Italia finora  ha portato a casa ben 100 Oscar in tutte le diverse categorie. Hollywood ama veramente gli italiani e li aspetta a braccia aperte.

E degli attori italiani che invece ad Hollywood ci sono già arrivati, su quale ricade la sua preferenza?

Ne ho tanti di preferiti. Anna Magnani, Sophia Loren, Marcello Mastroianni, Roberto Benigni. .. adoro sempre guardarli.

Paolo Sorrentino ha vinto l’Oscar con la “Grande Bellezza”…crede che con il prossimo film in uscita il regista italiano riuscirà a bissare il successo?

Naturalmente. Ero con lui quando ha vinto il Golden Globe. È sempre possibile vincere se si dispone di un buon film. Stavo anche allenando l’attrice del suo prossimo film. Allora, staremo a vedere. 

Il suo libro “Stop Acting Start Living” svela come ottenere felicità e successo. Basta leggere un libro per diventare felici e avere successo significa davvero essere felici?

Prima di tutto bisogna essere felici di avere successo a Hollywood e il mio libro ti aiuta proprio a capire come realizzare questo. Infondo cos’è la vita se non si è felici…la felicità sblocca il talento, aiuta i propri affari rende l’esistenza migliore. La “Happy People” vive più a lungo.

Sembra che oggi il problema di molte star sia proprio quello di gestire il proprio successo una volta ottenuto. I suoi insegnamenti prevedono anche lezioni in tal senso?

C’è bisogno di una guida per questo. Se si dispone di meravigliosi insegnanti e amici intorno a te, non c'è mai un problema

Le sue lezioni prima ancora di insegnare ad interpretare dei personaggi, mirano a fare capire come interpretare se stessi superando i propri blocchi personali e riconoscendo i comportamenti sbagliati. Una scuola di vita, quindi, che può servire non solo per diventare attori...

Infatti, questi sono i principi che si possono apprendere…
1 Impara ad amare se stessi.
2. Segui il tuo cuore, il tuo istinto, la tua mente è sempre sbagliata.
3. Sii te stesso. E’ bello essere diversi.
4. Avvia sempre qualcosa che si vuole fare solo se si è pronti.
5. Non lasciare che i soldi ti impediscano di vivere il tuo sogno.

In America attori e gente comune si affidano anche a Scientology per gestire le proprie paure, cosa ne pensa?

Personalmente non conosco nessuno che crede in Scientology. Per me e per i miei amici di Hollywood, quelli di Scientology sono totalmente pazzi!
Se si ha un problema nella vita bisogna trovare qualcosa di più positivo che possa essere di aiuto.

Nelle sue classi propone l’adozione di un metodo che aiuta gli studenti a diventare gli attori che sono nati per essere. Può funzionare solo se c’è dall’altra parte un certo talento e come si fa per riconoscerlo? 

Se si vuole ottenere qualcosa o si ha il sogno di qualcosa che si vuole fare, si ha già un talento. Ma solo la giusta formazione è in grado di liberare il proprio talento. Quindi studiare con il meglio per essere il migliore.

Oggi c’è sempre più la tendenza a scoprire nuovi talenti attraverso i reality o filmati di pochi minuti pubblicati su Youtube…cosa ne pensa…

Il talento è talento e può arrivare da qualunque cosa  

Fra i suoi allievi ci sono anche importanti uomini di affari. Anche loro devono imparare a recitare per raggiungere il successo nello show business? 

Nessuno mai ci insegna come avere successo nella vita e questo è un grosso problema in tutto il mondo. Bisogna imparare la lingua del successo per avere successo. 

Con quale politico le piacerebbe lavorare? 

La Casa Bianca mi ha contattato per lavorare con George Bush ma non l’ho fatto. Lavorerò con chi chiunque vuole stare meglio.

Quando ritorna a Roma, di cosa proprio non può fare a meno…

Quando sono a Roma, mi piace il cibo, la gente e il paesaggio incredibile. Stare a Roma è come vivere in un museo. Il cuore di Roma è così bello. ..gli artisti, poi,  sono incredibili. Sono fortunato ad essere qui.

You started the career of many stars from Hollywood and from the rest of the world. Can you tell us the name of the one you are more proud of? 

I’m most proud of Cameron Diaz. I started her career with the movie “The Mask” with Jim Carrey. She says she could of never done it without me. 

You are back in Italy for your masterclass where you teach the students how to become a successful actor. From your previous experiences, do you think Italy has actors that have what it takes to make it in Hollywood? 

Italians can be the best actors. They just need the latest training. Which I’m going to give them. Italians have won 100 Oscars so far, in all different categories. Hollywood loves Italians.

Talking about those Italian actors that already made it in Hollywood, who is your favorite? 

I have so many favorite. Anna Magnani, Sofia Loren, Marcello Mastroianni, Roberto Benigni. I love watching them.

As you know, Paolo Sorrentino won the Oscar last year, do you think he could win again with his new movie? 

Of course. I was with him when he won the Golden Globe.  You can always win if you have a good movie. I was just coaching an actress in his upcoming next movie. So, let’s see.

His book "Stop Acting Start Living" reveals how to achieve happiness and success. Just read a book to become happy and successful means to really be happy?

First you have to be happy to succeed in Hollywood. My book gives you ideas of how to accomplish that.  If you are not happy then what is life about anyway. Happiness unlocks your talent. Happiness helps your deal with life better. Happy People live longer.

It seams that nowadays the problem that lots of stars have is to learn how to handle success. Does your teaching includes this? 

You need a mentor to help you with that.If you have wonderful teachers and friends around you, there never is a problem.

In your classes, before teaching how to play a character, you teach how to understand ourselves overcoming personal blocks and understanding wrong behaviours. It’s like a school of life, that could help also non actors....? 

1. Learn to Love yourself.

2. Follow your heart, your instincts, your mind is always wrong.

3. Be yourself. It’s great to be different.

4. Always start something you want to do before you are ready.

5. Don’t let money ever stop you from living your dream.

In America, actors and non actors believe also in Scientology to learn how to handle their fears, what do you think?

I don’t “personally” know anyone that believes in Scientology.  For me and my Hollywood friends, Scientology sound totally CRAZY! If you have a problem in life, find something more positive to help you.

With your method you help the students to become the actors they were born to be. Do you think this can work only with those that have talent? How do you recognise that? 

If you want to achieve something or you have a dream about something you want to do, you have the talent. But only the right training can free your talent.  So study with the best to be the best. 

Nowadays lots of talents are discovered from reality shows, youtube videos...what do you think? 

Talent is Talent whatever it comes from doesn’t matter.

Among your students there are also business men. Do they also have to learn how to “act” to become successful?  Life is an act. But you have to learn how to be successful. 

Nobody ever teaches you how to succeed in life. It’s a big problem around the world. You must learn the language of success to succeed. Be smart start today!

With whom of politicians would you like to work with?  

The White House contacted me to work with George Bush. Which I didn’t do. But they asked. I will work with anyone who wants to get better.

What is the thing you always want to do whenever you are back in Rome? 

When I in Rome I love the food, the people and the incredible scenery. Rome is like living in a museum. The heart of Rome is so beautiful. And the artists are amazing! I’m so lucky to be here.
